To date I have been very disappointed with the portable speakers on the market in terms of the volume they can produce. I did however notice when playing certain bird calls that the volume was significantly better than other bird calls. Bearing this in mind I decided to take a different approoach and see if I could find software that is capable of increasing the volume of the recording. A short google turned up the following free program:

Wave Pad Audio Editor, which is produced by NCH Software. There is a Pro version, however for the task I had in mind the free version is more than adequate. This software on its own will not make a significant difference to most recordings, however it will improve some.
